Advice for Young Writers

A commenter tells us she's 13 and about halfway through a science-fiction novel; how can she find a publisher?

It's encouraging to see so many teenagers with the drive and discipline to write book-length fiction. I offered some detailed advice on the subject back in 2006, in this post.

For a little more advice, see my online course, Write a Novel, which has a lesson on researching agents and publishers.

Good for her for writing and seeking advice. I don't think I ever finished the novel I started at 13...

I was wondering if anyone knows if www.insomanywords.com is a legit site? I would like to submit my writings for review, has anyone used it?

It's a great thing to encourage youngsters to write.

However, I fail to see how someone so young can be capable of working to publication standard. A successful author puts someting of life into their work.

At thirteen, there will be no life experience. The work will be regurgitated from books they've read.

That's not to say the writing won't be of a good standard, but there will be no originality.
