The Standard, a Hong Kong business magazine:
Coalition hits back in show of unity.
Blaming functional constituencies as the main reason for Hong Kong's widening income gap, a coalition of 38 civic groups and all 23 pan-democratic legislators launched a campaign yesterday calling for them to be abolished.
The coalition also urged the government to withdraw its 2012 political reform proposal - scheduled to be voted on in the legislature on June 23 - and to scrap all appointed seats to the district councils.
It warned of further undisclosed action if the government ignores its calls.
Representatives of the civic groups and the legislators have signed a petition, which will be presented to the government today.
The People's Movement Against Functional Constituencies said it launched the campaign as it felt they were the main reason for the widening income gap.
Spokeswoman Mabel Au Mei-po explained that functional constituency lawmakers have refused to support legislation aimed at improving people's livelihood, such as the minimum wage bill.
"People's livelihood can only be improved if there is true democracy in Hong Kong," she said.
