From the English-language Wiener Zeitung: Bird flu spreads to Arche Noah.
After two swans were found dead in a Styrian animal sanctuary, all 32 chicken, ducks and geese in the so-called "Arche Noah" in Graz had to be killed as a precautionary measure.
Herbert Oster, the manager of the sanctuary, was in shock: "It is unbelievable that it has hit us now." He said that the whole house will be disinfected to make sure it can open again early next week.
One of the swans who might have died of the H5N1-strain of the flu had been recovered from the river Mur a week ago and brought to the Arche Noah. That was before the first cases of bird flu had been confirmed in Styria. As the disease seems to spread, the ban on keeping poultry outside was extended to almost all of the province. A similar step was taken in Carinthia. In Burgenland, authorities were thinking about widening the ban.
