From The Punch, a Nigerian news source: Farmers resist destruction of chickens.
The Federal Government on Monday alleged that some farmers in six Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory where cases of the dreaded bird flu had been reported were resisting attempts by health officials to cull and destroy their chickens.
The Director, Special Projects in the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Abdulsalami Nasidi, told our correspondents in Abuja, that the farmers see government's efforts to contain the spread of the virus as a threat to their livelihood.
Nasidi, who spoke shortly after President Olusegun Obasanjo announced that laboratories had been set up to contain the disease, added, "The truth is that people quietly eat dying chickens and do not listen to warnings from the health officials.
"When you go to them, they ask you, 'what are you telling us? We have been eating dying chickens for centuries. How can you tell us not to eat them now?'"
