Laboratory test results from the Ministry of Health's Research Development Center dated November 1, 2007 and Jakarta-based Eijkman Institute test results confirmed that MN (M, 31) from Bengkalis District, Riau Province is positively infected by the H5N1 virus.
MN had onset on 31 October 2007. He was admitted to Permata Hati Hospital in Duri sub-district on November 3, 2007 then referred to Arifin Achmad Hospital in Pekanbaru on November 6,2007. When MN arived at the hospital at 13.00, he had passed away.
MN had shown symptoms of fever, breathing difficulties, leucopenia (a decrease in the number of white blood cells), thrombositopenia (a decrease in the number of platelets in the blood) and pneumonia (an infection of the lung that causes respiration problems ).
Indonesia now records 113 human cases of bird flu, 91 of them are fatal.
