B.C.health officials have decided to close Beairsto Elementary School in Vernon for the next week due to a young student who has tested positive for the swine flu.
The student is experiencing a mild case and is at home recovering well.
"At this point, there are no reasons for parents or schools in other parts of B.C. to be concerned about children's health while at school," Provincial Health Officer Perry Kendall said Thursday.
The school closure, believed to be the first in Canada, came as the number of confirmed cases of swine flu in Canada soared, with another 15 cases reported — five in British Columbia, four in Alberta, four in Nova Scotia and one each in Ontario and Quebec.
The national number now stands at 34. Eleven of them are in B.C., according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.
