Via The Fiji Times Online: Ministry treats 97pc of diseases. Excerpt:
The Health Ministry has recorded a total of 323 dengue cases, 279 leptospirosis cases and 174 typhoid cases since January.
Of these, the majority were recorded in the Western Division with 160 confirmed dengue cases, 236 confirmed leptospirosis cases and 117 confirmed typhoid cases.
However, national adviser for communicable diseases, Dr Mike Kama, said about 97 per cent of these cases had been treated with only a small proportion still sick.
Dr Kama said while the majority of those infected in the west were between the ages of 10 and 39, people of all ages had been afflicted.
Commenting on where most of the cases had been recorded, the national adviser said dengue was mostly seen in sub-rural and urban areas while leptospirosis and typhoid were recorded in rural and sub-rural areas.
He also said more men than women were infected in the west.
Dr Kama said there had been seven confirmed leptospirosis deaths while there were 20 suspected deaths from the disease.
