Via Prensa Latina: AIDS Is the Leading Cause of Death in Haiti.
AIDS is currently the leading cause of death in Haiti, where there are more than 200,000 people with the disease, said today the Minister of Health.
According to the Minister, Gabriel Timothée, the infant mortality rate is also increasing given the number of children infected with this disease.
He further stated that at least 25,000 children are orphaned by the disease, which suffers at least 2 percent of the population.
However, Timothée acknowledged some progress in the country, as a general understanding of the risks of disease and improvements in the behavior of infected people.
He also called on Haitians to participate on Sunday in a set of activities aimed at informing and preventing people about the risks of HIV.
This report surprises me. AIDS is rarely mentioned in the Haitian media, or on the websites of NGOs operating in the country. Less surprisingly, Thimothée doesn't provide the numbers of deaths that put AIDS in the number-one position.
