The Cuban government, trying to make everyone believe that the June outbreak of cholera in Manzanillo is under control, isn't reporting in its national media on the situation in Granma province, where the local authorities have announced vigorous new measures.

Jorge Tamayo, residente en Manzanillo, corroboró que las medidas que se están tomando continúan siendo anunciadas en la Revista Informativa, programa que comenzó a ser trasmitido desde que se detectó el cólera y que sale al aire todos los días a las 6:30 pm por, CNC Granma, un canal de televisión con alcance limitado para la provincia.
Jorge Tamayo, a resident of Manzanillo, confirmed that such measures are being announced in the Informative Review, a program that's been running since the detection of cholera. It airs every day at 6:30 pm on CNC Granma, a TV channel whose range is limited to the province.
“Yo no me pierdo la Revista Informativa ni un solo día porque mantiene a uno al tanto de lo que está aconteciendo y te orientan a tomar precauciones. Aunque fuera bueno que dieran las cifras de los fallecidos; eso haría que las personas tomaran mayor conciencia sobre la dimensión de la enfermedad”, destacó el manzanillero.
"I never miss the Informative Review, not even one day, because it keeps me up to date and they tell you how to take precautions. But it would be good if they gave the statistics on the deaths; that would make people more concerned about the scope of the disease," the Manzanillo man said.
Según Tamayo, un panel de especialistas médicos, que participan en la Revista, anunció que el transporte ferroviario quedaba suspendido debido a que sus condiciones son proclives a la proliferación de la enfermedad. “Aquí sólo están entrando los ómnibus”, señaló.
According to Tamayo, a panel of medical specialists who take part in the Review announced that rail travel remains suspended because conditions are favourable for the spread of the disease. "Here they're only letting in buses," he said.
Varios residentes contactados confirmaron que “el tren lo quitaron desde el día primero de este mes”, mientras evaluaban a ese medio de transporte, por sus pésimas condiciones higiénicas-sanitarias, como “una inmundicia”.

Sobre las fiestas de carnavales, y las actividades culturales y recreativas por el verano, Tamayo confirmó, que quedaron suspendidas y agregó, que “la actividad cultural que sea necesario realizar, tiene que ser con artistas de la localidad. No se permite la entrada de ningún artista foráneo”.
As for carnival festivals and summer cultural and recreational activities, Tamayo confirmed that they remain suspended. He added that "If there's necessary cultural activity, it has to be with local artists. They're not allowing any outside artists."
También agregó que “a nivel de organismos y empresarial, se están sometiendo a un periodo de cuarentena a todos los que tengan que viajar hacia otras provincias a participar en alguna reunión o cualquier otro evento”.
He also added that "On the level of agencies and businesses, they're imposing a quarantine period on everyone who has to travel to other provinces to take part in a meeting or any other event."

Mientras que el municipio Bayamo, cabecera provincial, donde Ciro Mejías, un residente, confirmó el fallecimiento por cólera de dos personas, fue declarado en cuarentena.
Meanwhile Ciro Mejías, a resident, confirmed that the town of Bayamo, the provincial capital, is in quarantine with the cholera deaths of two persons.
“Aquí en Bayamo la parte más complicada está para las zonas de la Julia y Mabay, donde hay muchísimos contagiados y la semana pasada murieron dos; pero estas cifras no las dan en la televisión, ellos siguen diciendo que los muertos son tres”, dijo Mejías.
"Here in Bayamo the most complicated part is in the Julia and Mabay areas, where there are very many cases and two died last week. But they don't give these statistics on TV, where they keep saying there have been three deaths," Mejías said.
