Via The Times of India: Encephalitis claims 6 lives in 24 hours.
LUCKNOW: Six more children died of acute encephalitis at Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das Medical College since Saturday. With this, the death toll due to this dreaded disease since January this year has touched 161, including around 130 children.
Until now, 778 patients have undergone treatment at the Gorakhpur medical college this year. In 2011, the killer disease claimed 579 lives, most of them children.
However, experts fear that the toll may rise this year as 161 people have died by the onset of the season.
"Acute encephalitis syndrome deaths increase between August and September when enteroviral infections spread rapidly," said Dr R N Singh, a Gorakhpur-based pediatrician.
