Via The Saturday Monitor: Surviving the deadly Ebola: A joyous tale shrouded in painful memories. Excerpt from a long, fascinating report:
Many people must be aware of the instant danger caused by the deadly Ebola virus. Therefore to learn that someone survived the disease which even medics do not find easy to diagnose, many believers would attribute it to Godly intervention while non-believers would simply attribute it to luck.
It is close to 12 years since the Ebola virus hit Gulu District in northern Uganda. The outbreak hit in three waves from October 2000 through January 2001.
Walter Odong is one of the few people that survived the haemorrhagic fever, Ebola 12 years ago. He says it was on November 4, 2000 when his landlord’s granddaughter felt sick. Since there was no one around, he was asked to take the sick girl to Lacor Hospital.
After taking her through the medical check-up, Odong decided to find a bed for her to rest. At that moment, Odong says he saw a friend lying on a bed in the ward and decided to go to talk to her. Though he did not even shake hands with her, Odongo says the mere touching of the patient’s bed was enough for him to contract the disease.
