KMC to conduct raids in khatals, piggeries. Asked for an English definition of "khatal," Google Translate has failed me. [
Update: Mike Coston kindly informs me it means "cowshed."] Excerpt:
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and police will conduct raids to spot khatals and piggeries in the city. This was decided at a high-level meeting held in the chamber of the joint municipal commissioner yesterday. The move aims at forestalling the spread of Japanese encephalitis.
Some khatals and piggeries are being run illegally in the added areas. The KMC will issue notice to the khatal and piggery owners and will ask them to shut them down. All the khatals were shifted to Dankuni almost a decade ago.
But flouting the state government order some khatal owners carried on with their trade. The khatals are not cleaned properly and serve as the breeding ground of Japanese encephalitis. The police stations have been asked to identify them and prepare a report.
Meanwhile, the civic authorities will intensify their drives against mosquito larvae.
