The Daily Monitor:
Medical staff not paid for 3 months. Excerpt:
Staff at the China-Uganda Friendship Hospital in Naguru, a city suburb, have not received salary for the past three months, paralysing services at the referral facility that was opened in May.
The workers, including nurses, nursing assistants, doctors, clinical officers, administrative and support staff, who were recruited between February and April 2012 on contract terms, say the development has left them unable to feed their families.
A nurse, who asked not to named for fear of reprimand, told Daily Monitor that since starting work, authorities have asked them to be patient as the salary issues are sorted out. “We are tired of waiting for the pay, we have families to look after. They [authorities] have been promising month after month and there is nothing yet,” the nurse said yesterday. The hospital director, Dr Edward Naddumba, said he could not comment on the matter because it was “a long story”.
Cause of delay
However, the Ministry of Health permanent secretary, Dr Asuman Lukwago, confirmed that the staff had not received their salaries for June, July, and August due to delays in having the staff names in the public service system.
This newspaper could not get a comment from the Ministry of Public Service, with most officials declining to comment on the issue following the suspension of the Permanent Secretary and other senior officials
