As a graduate (College '62), I was curious to see how my alma mater was dealing with the storm. Via the Columbia University website:
Hurricane Sandy Update, 10/29/2012, 8:10 p.m. Excerpt:
As announced earlier, all classes and events at Columbia University are cancelled on Tuesday (10/30/2012). This includes all campuses.
Students should check their individual school websites for additional information.
Non-essential personnel are not required to report to work on Tuesday.
We continue to urge all members of the Columbia community to stay informed about conditions, keep windows closed, and remain indoors if possible.
We will provide an additional update here by noon Tuesday. We also will continue to update the Columbia homepage, www.columbia.edu, and the Columbia University Medical Center homepage, www.cumc.columbia.edu.
Morningside Campus Updates for Tuesday, October 30
In response to the increasing intensity of the storm, a number of Morningside gates have been closed:
•South and North Pedestrian Gates on College Walk (Main Gates remain open);
•Chapel Gate;
•Earl Hall Gate;
120th Street gate;
•Wien Double large gates (the pedestrian gate remains open.)
Please use alternate entrances to campus, including the Northwest Corner Building and staircase.
I expect schools all over the US east coast have similar messages on their websites—where they still have power.
