KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 27 deaths due to dengue were reported in the country since January until Oct 6 this year, an increase of 13 percent, from 24 reported during the corresponding period last year.
Health Ministry director-general Datuk Seri Dr Hassan Abdul Rahman said there was also an increase in the number of dengue cases reported during the period, totaling 16,729 cases, up by 11 percent from 15,036 cases last year.
Five states recorded an increase in cases, namely, Kedah 80 percent (291 cases), Kelantan 66 percent (371 cases), Perlis 62 percent (53 cases), Perak 38 percent (363 cases) and Sabah 25 percent (83 cases), he said in a statement issued here friday.
He said the weekly monitoring by the ministry found a drastic increase in dengue cases in Sarawak and Perak in the 40th week from Sept 30 to Oct 6.
