Dengue fever 'not a threat'. Excerpt:
Cases of dengue fever in the archipelago of Madeira may reach mainland Portugal but are not a threat the Lisbon Institute of tropical medicine has said.
“The fact the disease exists in Madeira and that there are people infected does not mean the bug can be transmitted to other European countries”, Paulo Gouveia de Almeida said.
The university professor said the disease can only be transmitted between humans where there is the right kind of mosquito that can carry the infection.
The mosquito breeds in stagnant water as found in old tyres, flower pots and vases.
Over 50 people have been diagnosed with dengue in, or after visiting, Madeira and over 400 cases are awaiting lab results.
