The Daily Monitor, a report with a disturbing last line:
Victims of Ebola seek payment.
Kibaale District authorities have submitted a request to the government to financially compensate some of the people who were affected by the Ebola virus.
“Proposals for compensation for health workers who were infected but survived the epidemic have been submitted to the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development,” the district health officer, Dr Dan Kyamanywa, said yesterday.
He revealed that compensation demands by the family of Claire Muhumuza, a nurse who died of the virus, have been submitted to the Ministry of Public Service, which assured them that the submission will be considered.
Muhumuza’s family has also demanded that the late nurse be declared a hero for sacrificing her life in the struggle to treat Ebola victims.
Dr Kyamanywa declined to reveal the amount of money that would be disbursed to the affected families, saying the compensations will be determined by technocrats in the respective ministries.
“These families have high expectations. They argue that their beddings and some of their household utensils were burnt when a patient in their home tested positive,” Mr Stephen Mfashingabo, the district health secretary, said.
Meanwhile, district health officials are stunned by reports that many families in Nyanswiga Village, where Ebola was first confirmed, have resorted to witchcraft.
