El Instituto Pedro Kourí (IPK), centro encargado de la investigación, control y tratamiento de las enfermedades tropicales, está en cuarentena por causa del brote de cólera que azota al país.
The Pedro Kourí Institute, the centre charged with investigation, control, and treatment of tropical diseases, is in quarantine because of the cholera outbreak that has hit the country.
Manuel Coloma León, paciente de con VIH/SIDA -activista asociado al Movimiento Corriente Martiana-, informó que un paciente del municipio San Antonio de los Baños, provincia de Artemisa, que recibe tratamiento para el VIH/SIDA en esa institución médica, le pospusieron su terapia hasta que las autoridades sanitarias logren controlar el brote de cólera que se ha producido dentro de la instalación hospitalaria.
Manuel Coloma León, a patient with HIV/AIDS and an activist associated with the Corriente Martiana Movement, reports that a patient from San Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa province, has been receiving treatment in that institution. Según Coloma León, las tuberías que conducen el agua, desde el abastecimiento principal hacia las viviendas, presentan serias averías en sus paredes como resultado del deterioro producido por los periodos de sequía, tiempo en que el interior de las tuberías se oxida y carcome el metal hasta ocasionarle perforaciones.
According to Coloma León, the pipes that carry the water from the main storage facility to local households have leaks in their sides resulting from dry periods when the pipes' interior oxidizes and rusts the metal until it forms perforations.
Por esas perforaciones -apunta Manuel- se filtran residuales de aguas contaminadas con excremento y otras materias descompuestas que se mezclan con el agua potable.
Through these perforations, Manuel says, water contaminated with excrement and other rotting material mixes with the potable water.
