If you go to the site of Kantha Bopha Hospitals, you'll find an extraordinary achievement: 20 years of good, free child care thanks to Swiss doctor Beat Richner. I started visiting the site during last year's horrendous hemorrhagic dengue outbreak, which Dr. Richner has reported on in detail.
The hospitals in his system depend on donations to continue, and Dr. Richner on February 14 made a public appeal to the Cambodian government to increase its support.
For some reason he has said nothing publicly about the H5N1 outbreak that has brought terribly sick children to his hospital in the past weeks. I have no idea why that should be, but I hope that the Cambodian government, and the World Health Organization, have found the funds to enable Kantha Bopha to carry on.
