Via Cubanet.org, a February 5 report: Negocios cerrados. [Shuttered businesses] After describing the closing of many stores that sell food in the eastern city of Bayamo (population 200,000), the report explains why. Excerpt, with my translation:
La razón para la drástica medida de cierre de todos o casi todos los establecimientos que venden comida a la población es la expansión de la enfermedad diarreica aguda, o de otra índole pero siempre infecciosas, que confluyen en la urbanización. A los que intentaron burlar la prohibición les fue incautada toda la mercancía y se les impuso una multa de mil 500 pesos. Una cifra muy alta.
The reason for the drastic measure of closing all or almost businesses that sell food to the public is the spread of acute diarrhea or some other infectious disease, through the city. Those who try to flout the ban face seizure of all their merchandise and a 1,500-peso fine: A very high cost.

La voix populi indica que hay más de 200 ingresados en el principal hospital de la ciudad, el Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. El mismo hospital que recibió los cuerpos de Osvaldo Paya y Harold Cepero, tras el fatal accidente, el pasado 22 de julio.
Rumour says that over 200 patients are in the city's main hospital, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes—the same hospital that received the bodies of Osvaldo Paya and Harold Cepero after the fatal accident last July 22.
Muchos ciudadanos temen acercarse al hospital, y se habla de pasillos habilitados con camas. Dato no confirmado, por estar impedido el acceso a la instalación. Mientras, las autoridades no comentan cifras, y La Demajagua, órgano comunista en la provincia, más la televisora local CNC, omiten la tragedia que inunda la ciudad.
Many citizens are afraid to go near the hospital, and they talk about corridors lined with beds. The report can't be confirmed because access to the hospital is banned. Meanwhile the authorities won't mention numbers, and La Demajagua, the Communist newspaper in the province, and local television CNC, don't mention the tragedy that floods the city.
Camilo Cienfuegos, Rosa La Bayamesa, Ciro Redondo, Pedro Pompa, Barrio Azul, son circunscripciones populares y periféricas. Reportan el mayor nivel de enfermos. Es común en ellas el mal estado de las calles, los pequeños canales con aguas pútridas en frente de las casas, la ausencia de acueducto y de desagües albañales.
Camilo Cienfuegos, Rosa La Bayamesa, Ciro Redondo, Pedro Pompa, and Barrio Azul are crowded communities on the outskirts. They report the most cases. It's common in them to see the streets in bad condition, little canals full of putrid water in front of the houses, the absence of an aqueduct and sewer drains.
