South Korea has detected artificial seismic waves from North Korea at 11:57 am.
The Korea Meteorological Administration says the seismic waves measuring five-point-one on the Richter scale originated from North Korea's Hamgyong Province. North Korea has a nuclear test site in the province.
The U.S. detected seismic waves measuring four-point-nine on the Richter scale. The Japanese meteorological authority picked up a reading of five-point-two and China recorded the waves at four-point-five.
The presidential office said the government is working on analyzing the waves but noted it is likely that they are related to a nuclear test in North Korea.
And to think I can remember when nuclear tests were not only considered essential to national security, but both the US and the Russians (and then the British, French, and Chinese) proudly set off their bombs in the atmosphere.
Update: The test has been confirmed, Xinhua says, by South Korea.
