Two new human cases of H7N9 bird flu, one in Xiamen and one in Sanming, were reported on Monday, bringing the total number to ten in the province, according to a statement from the provincial health and family planning commission.
The patient in Xiamen is a 69-year-old man surnamed Lai, who lives in the mainland Haicang District. He is in critical condition and now under intensive care in a hospital in the city. Mr. Lai was reported to have bought live chickens at a local farmer’s market three days before he was found to be infected with H7N9.
This is the first human H7N9 case confirmed in the city. Municipal leaders have paid great attention to the case and the condition of the patient. They have launched an emergency plan and required the relevant departments to strengthen H7N9 prevention and control in the city.
The Municipal Health Bureau has set up a working group and an expert group to help save the patient. The disease control and prevention departments have enhanced the sample testing and disinfection treatment of the city’s poultry markets, and kept an eye on those who had been in close contact with the patient.
Ten human H7N9 cases have been reported in the province since January 10th this year, including seven in Quanzhou and one each in Ningde, Xiamen and Sanming city. Human H7N9 cases have also been reported in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hunan Province, Shanghai and Beijing.
