South Korean officials say they suspect the first outbreak of bird flu among poultry in Gyeonggi-do province, home to the capital Seoul.
Earlier this month, a number of bird flu infections were reported at poultry farms in the country's southwest. Samples from 25 poultry farms across the country have so far confirmed infections of the H5N8 virus. Another 12 farms have reported suspected cases.
Authorities have set up hundreds of checkpoints along highways to disinfect vehicles. More than three million poultry have been killed, with another 530,000 still waiting to be culled.
