Via The Jakarta Post: Avian flu kills thousands of birds in Sragen.
Bird flu has killed thousands of birds in Sragen, making the regency the worst hit in Central Java this year.
“The results of preliminary tests on the deaths of thousands of ducks in Sragen showed they were infected with bird flu,” Central Java Husbandry Agency head Whitono said on Wednesday.
Whitono said most of the deaths occurred in the two districts of Ngrampal and Sidoharjo, Sragen. “However, the number of birds dying is now decreasing in the two districts.”
Whitono said his agency had instituted a mass cull. “We also distributed vaccines and disinfectant.”
The agency data shows as many as 4,310 ducks and 460 chickens died of bird flu in Sragen from Feb. 6 to Feb. 10. Last year, around 5,300 birds died from avian flu in the regency among the 29,484 birds that died of the disease in the province.
