Via the Saudi Gazette: MERS claims 3 more lives in Kingdom. The report, published earlier today, is already out of date: Saudi MERS cases now total 261, with 81 deaths. Excerpt:
Three more patients who contracted a potentially fatal Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus died amid a recent increase in infections in the Kingdom.
The Ministry of Health posted details of the deaths in a statement late Sunday evening. They included a 49-year-old resident of Jeddah, which has seen a recent spike in MERS infections. Two others from the southern Najran region and the area around Madinah also died. Both were 68.
The deaths were among 13 new cases reported in the Kingdom. A total of 79 people have died in Saudi Arabia from MERS.
Some 244 cases of MERS have been reported since the disease was identified in 2012. The spread of new infections slowed during the winter, but there has been a sudden increase in cases this month.
The 49 confirmed infections announced over the past week, mostly in Jeddah, represent an increase of 25 percent in the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak began. Panic over the spread of the virus among medical staff in Jeddah triggered the temporary closure of a hospital emergency room in the city earlier this month.
