This evening I got a comment from Dr. Jody Lanard on my post about the death of the Saudi lab specialist, but it seemed worth putting into a post of its own. Dr. Lanard has allowed me to do so, and here it is:
That is a very sad and bewildering story, Crof. See this January 2014 article about the state of Saudi health care -- I don't know how accurate it is, but it certainly raises questions about Saudi competence: http://bit.ly/1mwUrmp
If you post a link to today's Indiana health dept. press conference on the first US MERS case, I hope you will notice that although the US hospital is patting itself on the back for its great response to the case, somehow they didn't place the patient in full respiratory isolation until at least half a day after he arrived at the hospital (see Bob Roos' CIDRAP article at http://bit.ly/1if8pti and ABCNews' article at http://abcn.ws/1g3XcI3.
Hospital infection control seems to be problematic in Saudi Arabia, but Lord knows it isn't easy even in the US.
