Via CBS Los Angeles: 16 Being Monitored In LA County For Possible Exposure To Deadly MERS. Excerpt:
KCAL9 News has learned that as many as 16 people in LA County are being monitored for possible exposure to MERS.
MERS stands for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.
The California Department of Public Health says the 16 people were all passengers on a flight with a man who is now hospitalized with the disease in Florida.
This is really a non-story, but it reflects the ease and speed with which a disease can move around the world, and the importance of local public health resources in dealing with such threats. In that connection, Mike Coston at Avian Flu Diary has an important post on the decline in funding for US public health.
