Via Awareness Times: Kailahun Blasts Health Ministry. Excerpt:
Sequel to a rapid increase of Ebola infection and deaths in the Kailahun District, several indigenes of Kailahun on Sunday 8th June 2014, were very bitterly blaming Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation for levity and utter carelessness in managing the unfolding catastrophic crisis.
At a meeting organized by the Hon. Abu Jajua of Kailahun representing Constituency 07 (Njaluahun), at the National Stadium in Freetown, many people vehemently condemned that the ministry was not really treating the issue of Ebola with seriousness in light of the dreadful nature of the disease. According to them, an epidemic which needs to be treated with utmost seriousness was treated as a joke.
They point out that even when the disease got confirmed in Koindu, instead of taking leadership position, some very senior government officials started trivializing it and the Minister of Health even insulted dead victims as having themselves to blame.
Several indigenes openly said that when the Special Executive Assistant to President Koroma, Dr. Sylvia Blyden tried to bring the attention of the whole country in order to galvanize support and call for prayers, other government officials and some media persons went on the rampage to not only insult her but to ridicule her by calling her “Human Ebola”.
Citizens present, had high praises for the courage of Dr. Blyden to not only face ridicule but not give up her efforts to raise alarms on social media on behalf of the dying victims in Kailahun.
“We will ever remember her positive actions,” said Julius I. K. Foday, the son of a late popular parliamentarian who was one of the organisers. Giving an overview of the meeting, he said the meeting was organized for the people of Njaluahun to brainstorm and proffer solutions that will help to mitigate or contain the disease but he welcomed the large turn-out of others from other Kailahun chiefdoms.
