Via Awoko.com: The Exposed Ebola Fighter in Sierra Leone. Excerpt from a long report:
Fighting the deadly Ebola Virus in Sierra Leone is almost going out of control, if special attention is not given to it, as health workers including security at hospital gates, nursing aids, porters, nurses, medical Doctors and Community Based Organization (CBO’s) volunteers don’t have Personal Protective (PP) gears while performing their duty.
A 35 year old Porter, Abdulai Konteh (not his real name), like many other security gatemen, nurses, care-taker and nursing aids in most health centers works at the Government referral hospital in Makeni but does not have PP like almost of his colleagues.
He has to wash his only gloves on a daily basis for the next day’s use to protect himself from contacting the Ebola virus, according to what he told me from his limited idea on the use of gloves.
Like Abdulai Konteh, so also is Memunatu Mansaray in one of the health centers in Makeni, who expressed her disappointment and frustration over the Government, through the Health and Sanitation Ministry’s, inability to provide protective gears including gloves, goggles, plastic wears among others, especially in what she described as prone towns and cities.
She said some of them had to buy chlorine and hand gloves for their personal protection whiles others including porters have to recycle their gloves on a daily basis after work. A lot of money is being contributed by Multinational companies, Cabinet Ministers, National and International Non-Governmental Organization, state institutions among others towards eradicating the deadly Ebola virus.
