Via the El Paso Times: Beto O'Rourke to march to Tornillo tent city for immigrant children. Excerpt:
U.S. Rep Beto O'Rourke announced he is leading a march on Father's Day to the tent camp that is housing immigrant children in Tornillo.
O'Rourke, who is currently running against U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, sent an email out announcing the march, which will start at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at 18051 Island Guadalupe Rd. He also posted about the march on Twitter.
In the email, he said he would be joined by former El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar, who is running to replace O'Rourke in Congress. Advocates from the Latino Victory Project and other elected officials are expected to join.
The march also caught the attention of actress and comedian Chelsea Handler, who replied to a tweet about the march saying "Ok. Let me see if I can get down there."
Tornillo was chosen by the Trump administration to be the site of the first temporary shelter to house immigrant children who have been separated from their parents after entering the country without authorization.
Kenneth Wolfe, a spokesman for the Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said on Thursday that 360 children will be placed at the Tornillo site in the coming days. More could be added in the future.
Another report in the same paper says that Tornillo could expand to hold 4,000 children.
