It's almost February and I'm looking forward to giving a talk on Saltspring Island, which has had a remarkable black community since the 1860s. It's going to be a pleasure to revisit the Stark family, educator John Jones, and all the other black pioneers of Saltspring—with plenty of reference to the hundreds of others who settled in British Columbia in the gold rush of 1858.
