I'm currently reading Rat Island: Predators in Paradise and the World's Greatest Wildlife Rescue, by William Stolzenburg. It's an extremely interesting account of the particular problems of island wildlife, which evolved over thousands of years with no new predators to contend with. The advent of humans (and their rats) spread extinction with appalling speed.
Stolzenburg describes not only the extinctions but also the efforts to rescue endangered species from the Aleutians to New Zealand. It makes lively reading, though Stolzenburg's style is occasionally over the top.
