Kerry asks:
Hi, I'm in need of some serious help. For school we're doing action and linking verbs. I would like to know if, for example, in "have a pet" — is "have" an action or a linking verb.
Interesting question! A linking verb is one followed immediately by an adjective that describes the subject of the sentence:
I am happy. ("to be" followed by adjective "happy")
This kimchi tastes wonderful! ("taste" followed by adjective "wonderful")
She became upset at the news ("become" followed by adjective "upset")
Common verbs that may be followed by an adjective include feel, look, sound, smell, taste, appear, seem, become, and other verbs when they mean "become"--like get, turn, and grow.
So "to have" is not a linking verb—it's an action verb, the action in this case being possessing a pet.
