ES, the young woman with H5N1, had been out of the news for so long that I was beginning to think she would survive. So it was a shock this morning to find this story in People's Daily Online: Bird flu patient dead in Indonesia. Excerpt:
A 35-year old woman, who had been treated in a hospital in Jakarta since November 8 for having avian influenza, was dead earlier Tuesday, Indonesian Health Ministry said.
The death has put the total fatality to 57 out of 74 contracted people.
The woman is from Tanggerang, a city in outskirts of Jakarta.
"She died on Tuesday morning at 00:00 local time," an official of the anti-bird flu center of the ministry told Xinhua.
The woman was confirmed by the country's laboratory tests which were positive of having avian influenza on November 13, the official said
She had contact with fowls in the past, he said.
Here is the Antara version of the story. And here is the story in the Jakarta Post. WHO does not appear to have updated its Indonesian avian-influenza reports since November 13. I expect update 38 in a few hours.
