Two people are in a southeast Queensland hospital with flu symptoms similar to the deadly swine flu after a trip to Mexico.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the new influenza strain, feared to have killed 86 people in Mexico and infected 20 in the United States, has "pandemic potential".
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said the cases had not yet been confirmed and there was no need for panic.
"We do have two cases overnight of people checking into hospital whose symptoms are being tested," Ms Bligh told reporters.
