A man who avoided staying in the Government General Hospital after being admitted with symptoms of swine flu has become the second victim of the virus in the city, dying in the same hospital in the wee hours of Friday.
Confirming the death of the middle-aged man from Injambakkam, a suburban locality in South Chennai, due to the virus, GH Dean Dr Mohanasundaram said the man was earlier admitted with symptoms of swine flu but left the hospital without informing the authorities.
The victim was identified as 49-year-old Francis, a resident of Bethal Nagar on the East Coast Road. He was admitted to the GH on August 13 and given Tamiflu tablets. However, he left after giving his throat swab sample.
When the swab test results came a few days later, GH authorities alerted the public health department. Officials found that Francis had got himself admitted to a private hospital in Adyar for some other ailment. He did not inform the doctors at the private hospital that he was administered Tamilflu for having shown swine flu symptoms few days ago.
