Nationwide there are currently more than 1,000 people in whom the cause of diarrhea is suspected EHEC or has already been demonstrated. So far, according to official figures, ten people have died; more are in critical condition.
A survey of infections, cases of hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) and officially confirmed deaths related to EHEC (as of May 28):
Hamburg : 467 EHEC infection or suspected cases. 91 people are hospitalized with HUS or treated for suspected HUS. Two people have died.
Schleswig-Holstein : 248 proven infections. So far, 73 people diagnosed with HUS. Four people have died.
Lower Saxony : More than 140 confirmed illnesses and 50 suspected EHEC cases are known. At least three people have died. Over 40 people are currently suffering from the more severe complication of HUS.
North Rhine-Westphalia :
At least 48 people are confirmed infected by the pathogen. A further 36 people are suspected. 15 people are being treated for HUS.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern : More than 50 people were diagnosed with EHEC infection.
Hesse : Reporting 34 HUS cases.
Bremen : More than 50 people in Bremen and Bremerhaven is suspected EHEC. So far, 28 cases of HUS reported. A woman in Bremen in their EHEC infection unit died.
Bayern : As of Friday 23 EHEC infections have been reported; eight people were treated for HUS.
Berlin : 15 EHEC cases have been confirmed Friday. Six patients affected by HUS.
Saxony-Anhalt : Eleven confirmed infections were reported. Three of the patients are being treated for HUS.
Brandenburg : In four patients, infection was confirmed. In addition, there are at least four suspected cases and two affected individuals have suspected HUS.
Saxony : Reporting six EHEC patients, no cases of HUS.
Baden-Württemberg : Five cases of HUS have been reported officially.
Saarland : Five confirmed EHEC infections, three patients suffering from HUS. In another patient suspected HUS.
Thuringia : Five confirmed infections, two other suspected cases. Two patients are affected by HUS.
Rheinland-Pfalz : Two confirmed EHEC infections, a patient in critical condition.
