Via The Mainichi Daily News: Tsunami-devastated fishery in Iwate town starts making shipments again. Excerpt:
Six months after the earthquake and tsunami all but wiped out the fishery here, local processing plants and merchants have begun shipping Pacific saury once more.
The home delivery seafood operation, called "Tachiagare! Domannaka Otsuchi" (Stand tall, Otsuchi, the town in the center of it all), was founded by four local businesses, which began by building a homepage and soliciting investment, finally making their first shipments earlier this month.
The project, staffed by volunteers as well as workers from the four companies, was an uphill struggle. The March 11 tsunami destroyed all the processing plants and cold storage warehouses around the port, meaning the four companies essentially had to start everything from scratch.
However, start they did, transporting the Pacific saury -- which were landed at fishing ports in tsunami-devastated Kamaishi and Miyako, Iwate Prefecture -- and sending them on their way to customers near and far.
