The MSPP has released four more days of cholera statistics on its Documentation page, bringing us up to May 24. It looks as if the spike is over. Here are the numbers by day, with cases, hospitalizations, deaths, and departments in which the deaths occurred:
May 21: 155, 103, 2 (Grande Anse, Nord)
May 22: 158, 107, 2 (Artibonite, Nord)
May 23: 104, 58, 0
May 24: 109, 80, 1 (Nord)
Totals since the start of the outbreak in October 2010:
Cases: 547,011
Hospitalizations: 294,036
Deaths: 7,188
On May 20, the previous latest date, the death total was 7,182, so MSPP has evidently added an earlier death to the total. This is not entirely surprising, since almost every day's report includes departments that have not sent in statistics.
We should also remember that these numbers are probably a serious undercount. Dr. John Carroll, who's on the ground in Haiti, estimates the real numbers are twice the official ones.
