Via DNA: 5 cholera cases in 1 week reported in Gujarat. Excerpt:
Five fresh cases of cholera were reported from Behrampura area of Ahmedabad in the last seven days, taking the total number of patients of the infectious disease to nine.
Four of the five cholera patients are admitted in AMC’s hospital for contagious diseases in Behrampura and one in LG Hospital. The four patients admitted in the Behrampura hospital are Mosin Mohammad Akram Shaikh (17), Bholabhai Sureshbhai (18), and two infants, Mohammad Aliq (11 months) and Sana Saiyad (3).
Against a total eight cholera cases that were reported in Ahmedabad in 2011, this year nine cases have already come to light in the city.
The opposition in the AMC has alleged that poor sanitation in Behrampura area was responsible for the resurgence of cholera, gastroenteritis and jaundice in the locality.
“We have, time and again, complained about contaminated drinking water supply to Behrampura but the administration does not pay heed to our warnings. As a result, water-borne diseases have resurfaced in the city,” said Badruddin Shaikh, leader of opposition in the AMC.
