Hurricane Sandy hit Haiti hard on 24th October, leaving it with the highest death toll in the Caribbean region. It is believed that a total of 33,760 people were directly affected by this hurricane. 54 people lost their lives, an estimated 20 people were injured and 21 were reported missing throughout the country.
Material losses are considerable as Sandy destroyed approximately 6,274 houses and damaged more than 21,400. The damage to the agricultural sector is devastating with estimates citing a loss of over 104 million USD. This loss, however, not only has a significant economic impact, but also severely affects Haiti’s food security and consequently the health of the vulnerable populations.
The implications of Sandy on public health in Haiti are noteworthy as to date the Haitian Ministry of Health has recorded over 9,000 new cases of cholera.
