I really expect better than this from Xinhua—which should know the difference between "bird flus" and other flus: Bird flu virus infects 724 people in Venezuela - Xinhua. Excerpt, with my bolding:
A total of 724 people have been infected with the A/H1N1 bird flu virus so far this year in Venezuela, the Health Ministry said Thursday.
Cases were reported in almost all states, with Caracas and the states of Merida, Tachira, Zulia and Lara being the most affected regions, the ministry said.
There was an upsurge of infections in May as cases rose from 236 at the beginning of the month to 724 at the end.
National and local health authorities have strengthened sanitary measures, especially at hospitals, to contain the spread of the virus. If nothing else, this explains the report I posted this morning from the Trinidad Express, warning about Venezuelan "bird flu." The Venezuelans really are dealing with a serious H1N1 ("swine flu") outbreak, as this El Nacional report says: A 3-month-old in Sucre died last Saturday, and 724 cases were reported across the country as of May 25. Of those, 28 have died.
