Chikungunya fever hit 175 residents of the Western Visayas from January to July, with Negros Occidental having the highest number at 93, a Department of Health report said yesterday.
Negros Occidental also recorded the second most number of chikungunya cases in the country, next to Batangas that had 118, DOH records also showed.
In Western Visayas, 57 were hit by chikungunya in Antique, 13 in Iloilo and 12 in Guimaras, it added.
Chikungunya virus is carried by infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the same carriers of the dengue virus. The virus causes high fever and severe joint pain that start suddenly. It can also cause headache, muscle pain and rash, Provincial Health Officer Ernell Tumimbang said.
Chikungunya does not often result in death, but the symptoms can be disabling, and some people may get severe complications, he added.
