The ECDC Communicable Disease Threats Report is a weekly bulletin intended for epidemiologists and health professionals in the area of communicable disease prevention and control. This issue covers the period 16 to 22 February 2014 and includes updates on:
Seasonal influenza:
Sixteen of the 29 reporting countries reported widespread geographic patterns of influenza activity, however only two reported high intensity activity.
Measles:
Anthroposophic schools were involved in two recent measles outbreaks in two countries in 2014: in Austria and Finland. New outbreaks have been reported in Wales in the UK since October 2013 in the same area affected last year. The UK has also seen ten measles cases in returning travellers from the Philippines where there is an ongoing outbreak. The measles outbreak in the Netherlands is still ongoing but is showing signs of slowing down. The CDTR reports on measles in Europe once a month.
Avian influenza A(H10N8) in China:
As of 13 February 2014, three human cases of avian influenza A(H10N8) virus have been reported in Jiangxi province in China, the first case was reported by the Chinese authorities on 17 December 2012. These cases are considered to be sporadic cases that occurred in the context of enhanced testing of avian influenza in China. There is no evidence of secondary transmission.
Chikungunya in the Caribbean:
In the past week, 293 new cases of chikungunya have been reported in the Caribbean. New confirmed cases were reported from Saint Martin (FR), Martinique, Saint Barthélemy, Guadeloupe. In addition new cases were reported from Dominica. French Guyana reported two autochthonous cases. These last two cases are the first autochthonous chikungunya cases in mainland South America. St. Kitts and Nevis reported the first confirmed case.
