Via ReliefWeb, a May 16 report from MINUSTAH, the UN Stabilization Mission on Haiti: Chikungunya: How Haiti faces epidemic. Excerpt from a Goggle translation:
Chikungunya, the word is in almost every conversation, since the confirmation of the occurrence of the epidemic in Haiti by the Haitian government LE06 May. Since then, several measures such fumigation and treatment of mosquito breeding through the capital and regions. Population, it also protects itself by preventive measures including the purchase of drugs and insecticides, without forgetting the wastewater.
Insecticides and tidy drawer, Madeleine, 60 medicines, did everything to avoid Chikungunya. However, she suffered from this fever for three days. "Last Sunday, I did not feel well, my mouth was bitter, I was dizzy and I could not stand up, so I suffered," is she recalls.
This resident of Bizoton district of Port-au-Prince, is committed to combating the spread of this epidemic in its neighborhood. "I know for example that I must not leave puddles of water in the open air, I have to sleep under a mosquito net [...] issue to prevent the spread of this epidemic," she lists, broom tight in his hand, and sleeves rolled up.
These preventive measures are recommended by the Department of Public Health and Population (MSPP), across a broad communication campaign on the airwaves of radio and television. "As soon as I felt the first symptoms of Chikungunya, I did not panic because I had been warned. So I took prescribed by the doctor and here I am again standing and form drugs, "welcomes Charles, another resident of Carrefour.
In health centers and pharmacies, are formed long queues of people seeking care or medications to relieve muscle pain caused by the disease.
"The Monday, May 12, there were seven cases of Chikungunya," advised Dr. Mendelssohn Maurice the emergency room Diquini Adventist Hospital in Carrefour. Director for the promotion of health care MSPP, Dr. Jocelyne Pierre-Louis, "1529 cases of Chikungunya were reported in Haiti which 889 (50%) for the Department of the West."
At any given Thursday, May 15 at the Prime Minister's press briefing, Dr. Pierre-Louis presented the Action Plan against Chikungunya MSPP. The four axes of control plan are: surveillance, education, vector control and management of people affected by the disease.
While encouraging people to strictly observe individual preventive measures, it also introduced measures to prevent mass undertaken by the MSPP. "We have been treating 60 cottages Carrefour and Port-au-Prince, fumigation and the next distribution of drugs in items affected by the epidemic across the country."
I see nothing about chikungunya on the MSPP home page, which seems to have no document more recent than July 2013.
However, the MSPP Documentation page has a PAHO report dated May 16 and reporting 632 Haitian confirmed chikungunya cases. It also has a May 13 news release from MSPP about the disease.
