Thanks to Lucie Lecomte to alerting me to this story. First, a June 7 report from K'Mer Saga: Cameroon – Ebolowa: Bird Flu hits the Southern Region, over 6000 fowls killed! Excerpt:
The virus is in the capital of the Southern Region for two weeks now.
The spread of the H5N1 in Ebolowa is worrying. In less than two weeks, the epidemic has already killed more than 6,000 chickens in the regional capital of the South. The announcement if from the officials of the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA) who made the trip to Ebolowa to address the crisis.
La Nouvelle Expression (LNE) of 7 June revealed that the first outbreak was detected at the central market of Oyenga. “After some samples from chickens, the results of the examination were positive. Two farms in Ebolowa which were also tested also had a positive diagnosis for the avian influenza, ” reports the newspaper.
Sanitary measures have already been taken. “Here, we do not simply demolish counters and infected chickens; clean up all homes. Its a question to control highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) until there are no more new cases. All poultry of Oyenga market were destroyed and the site was disinfected. The other two farms that were also affected have also been disinfected,” says LNE.
On June 6, Daily News Cameroon reported: Bird flu spreads to the West Region. And Lucie sent a report from AfricaTime.com, warning that Cameroon's poultry industry is on the brink of collapse.
