Via mediacongo.net, an MCP report: The Ebola outbreak under control in Beni.
The Ebola virus disease has just been controlled in Beni in North Kivu province. According to a press release from the Ministry of Health in the DRC, this Tuesday, February 19, 2019 marks the 21st day without new confirmed case of Ebola in the health zone of Beni.
"This is a major breakthrough after the outbreak, which peaked between September and November 2018. We can consider that the Ebola epidemic is currently under control in Beni. New confirmed case of Ebola in the last 21 days are Kayina, Mandima, Musienene, Nyankunde and Tchomia," indicates this official document.
However, there is still a risk of a resumption of the epidemic in Beni because of the frequent movement of the population between Beni and neighboring areas where the epidemic remains active, including Butembo and Katwa.
The health zones of Katwa and Butembo remain the main focus of the epidemic at present. In the last 21 days, 92 new confirmed Ebola cases were reported, of which 58 (or 63%) were in Katwa and 16 (or 17%) were in Butembo.
The Ministry of Health recalls that the epidemic will be officially over when the country has not registered any new cases of Ebola for 42 days, twice 21 days (the incubation period of the virus).
It should be recalled that Beni alone recorded 234 Ebola cases, of which 118 confirmed and 127 deaths.
