Via the North Shore News, the school where I taught for 40 years contends with the pandemic: Capilano University extends winter break by one week. Excerpt and then a comment:
Students, staff and faculty at Capilano University in North Vancouver will get a little extra time to rest and rejuvenate this winter break as well as plan for the upcoming term, the university has announced.
As part of the post-secondary institution's evolving response to COVID-19, the school stated in a release yesterday that it was shifting the start of classes for the spring 2021 term from Jan. 4 to Jan. 11, 2021, effectively extending winter break by one week after final exams wrap up this month.
“This one-week delayed start provides faculty with additional time to prepare for the beginning of the new term in a remote, adapted model and for university staff and administrators to contribute to a smooth start to the term,” the release stated.
The release also noted that the longer break will give students more time between terms to rejuvenate and prepare for their upcoming classes.
“For new incoming students this also affords some time to become familiar with remote learning tools. Our goal is the delayed start to classes will assist all students and teaching faculty to start in a well-prepared way in the new year,” according to the release.
Although the spring term will have a delayed start, that doesn’t mean the term itself is going to be shorter. The university has stated the term will end April 16 instead of April 9.
The reading break scheduled for the week of Feb. 15 will remain the same, the university stated.
I sympathize with my old colleagues. This has been a really grim time to be a teacher.
