Thanks to Patrick Barnard for alerting me to this story. Via La Prensa Austral in Punta Arenas: Ejército ratifica que 26 militares y 10 civiles que cumplían funciones en la Antártica arrojaron positivo a Covid-19.[Army confirms 26 military and 10 civilians working in Antarctica have tested positive for COVID-19]. Excerpt, in my translation:
COVID-19 appeared in Antarctica last week and despite protocols established in previous quarantines and pre-travel PCR medical tests, the virus has crossed the Drake Strait and reached the white continent. Those who tested positive have been evacuated.
As reported in La Prensa Austral last Thursday, alarm at the first coronavirus cases in Antarctica was sounded on Monday and Tuesday last week. But after publication the Navy reported that the naval vessel Sargento Aldea, returning from Antarctica, had 3 positive cases in its crew as well as 2 soldiers, who were disembarked in Punta Arenas.
The fact was also confirmed by the Army, which ordered the immediate replacement of the 2020 crew of the base and the transfer of the crew that will remain in 2021 that had completed its 14-day preventive quarantine period.
