Via Correio Braziliense in Brasilia: Brazil has most lethal pandemic week with 10,000 killed by covid-19. Excerpt from the Google translation, lightly edited:
The ninth epidemiological week of 2021 (February 28 until this Saturday, March 6), was the one with the highest number of deaths by covid-19 in Brazil, with 10,104 records. The highest number so far had been recorded in the previous epidemiological week (21-27 February), with 8,244 deaths from the disease caused by the new coronavirus, which shows an upward trend in the curve.
The number of cases was also the highest this week in the whole pandemic, with 421.6 thousand cases. Epidemiological week 2 (10 to 16 January), until then, was the one with the highest number of cases, with 379 thousand reported. At the same time that the country sees an increasing increase in these data, vaccination is moving at a slow pace.
The Ministry of Health announced yesterday a new schedule of distribution of vaccines against covid-19 , with the forecast of delivery of eight million doses fewer than what was informed last Thursday. The folder now plans to deliver 30 million doses in March. The change is due to the exclusion of eight million doses of Covaxin from the Indian laboratory Bharat Biotech, which would be imported from India.
It is the second time this week that the Ministry has reduced the number of doses scheduled for March. Last Thursday, the ministry had already announced 8.6 million fewer doses in the National Immunization Program.
Total deaths and cases
Yesterday, the Ministry of Health recorded 1,555 deaths in 24 hours, reaching a total of 264,325 people killed by the disease during the new coronavirus pandemic. There are already 10.9 million confirmed cases, and in the last 24 hours, 69,609 more people with the disease were counted in the country. The state with the highest number of deaths by covid-19 is São Paulo, with 61.4 thousand, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 33.7 thousand and Minas Gerais, with 19.3 thousand.
In recent weeks, the country has seen an increasing increase in the number of cases and deaths from the disease, with bed occupancy rates in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in several states at a critical level. On Wednesday (3), with 1,910 deaths due to the disease in 24 hours, Brazil broke a new daily record.
